Originally designed and made explicitly for physical labour, the bleu de travail, first appeared in nineteenth century France as outerwear made of a thick cotton. A loose-fitting jacket with roomy pockets (breast- and hip-) and button closure, the original ones were produced in a vibrant blue dye, hence the name, which translated to English means ‘blue work’.
